Shocking Incident in Lowell’s Acre Neighborhood

In a recent incident that shook the residents of Lowell’s Acre neighborhood, Sovisal Var, a 53-year-old man, was charged with firearm and assault offenses after firing multiple rounds from a handgun inside a garage bay on Rock Street. The incident occurred on April 12, prompting a swift response from the Lowell Police Department.

Police Response and Witness Accounts

According to a Lowell Police incident report, officers were called to the 100 block of Rock Street after receiving reports of an intoxicated man, later identified as Var, brandishing a handgun and firing multiple rounds. Three men working in a nearby garage bay reported a confrontation with Var, who was visibly angry and allegedly displayed a handgun during the altercation.

Search and Discovery

During a search of the garage bay where Var was allegedly located, police discovered four spent 9mm shell casings on the floor. Additionally, live rounds were found inside a desk drawer. Surveillance footage from the scene reportedly showed Var carrying a black item resembling a handgun, though a firearm was not recovered during the search.

Legal Proceedings and Bail Conditions

Var was arraigned in Lowell District Court on charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. Following a dangerousness hearing, Var was released on bail with strict conditions, including wearing a GPS monitoring device, abstaining from alcohol, and submitting to SCRAM testing to monitor alcohol consumption.

Attorney’s Statement

Var’s attorney, Ryan Sullivan, described the incident as a result of “a person making poor choices” due to a misunderstanding involving alcohol consumption. Sullivan emphasized that there was no preexisting animosity between the parties involved, attributing the incident to alcohol-fueled decision-making.

As the case progresses in court, Var is scheduled to return for a pretrial hearing on June 20. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of impulsive actions and the importance of responsible firearm handling.
