Uttara Kannada (Karnataka): A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in the serene surroundings of Kali River near Akorda in Dandeli taluk of Uttara Kannada district, claiming the lives of six members of a family on Sunday. The victims, identified as Nazira Ahmed (40), Alfiya Ahmed (10), Mohin Ahmed (6), Reshma Unnisa (38), Ifra Ahmed (15), and Abid Ahmed (12) from Hubballi, met with a watery grave while on a leisure trip.
The ill-fated family, consisting of three individuals from Hubli and three from Bengaluru, had embarked on a holiday excursion to their cousin’s house in Hubli. Eager to make the most of the summer vacation, they decided to venture out on a group outing, little knowing that tragedy would strike.
Details of the Tragic Incident
On that fateful day, a total of eight family members set out for a day of relaxation by the Kali River, drawn by its tranquil waters. Excited at the prospect of a refreshing swim, six of them, including children, descended into the river for a dip. However, joy turned to horror as they slipped and were swept away by the river’s unforgiving currents.
One of the girls among the group found herself in distress and was carried away by the water. In a valiant attempt to save her, the remaining five family members plunged into the river, only to succumb to the powerful currents themselves. Despite their best efforts, the swift waters proved to be too much to overcome, leading to a tragic loss of lives.
Recovery Efforts and Ongoing Search
Following the distressing incident, the Dandeli rural police sprang into action, coordinating with the Jungle Lodge of Dandeli City and local residents to retrieve the bodies from the river. As of now, four deceased individuals have been recovered and transferred to the Dandeli Hospital mortuary, with efforts underway to locate the remaining two victims.
The entire community has been left reeling from the shock of this devastating event, serving as a grim reminder of the unpredictable nature of water bodies.
