Man Dies After Setting Himself on Fire Outside New York City Courthouse
A tragic incident unfolded outside the New York City courthouse where former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial is currently underway. Witnesses were left in shock as they saw a man, later identified as 37-year-old Max Azzarello, pour liquid over himself and set himself on fire at 1:39 p.m. local time on Friday.
Details of the Incident
According to the New York Police Department, Azzarello, a Florida resident who had recently arrived in New York City, walked into Collect Pond Park near the courthouse. He opened a book bag, scattered papers and pamphlets on the ground, and then proceeded to set himself ablaze. The materials he had with him were described as being of a conspiracy-theory nature.
Efforts to Save Azzarello
After setting himself on fire, Azzarello fell onto a police barrier. Civilians and court officers rushed to his aid, using coats and extinguishers to try to put out the flames. The New York City Fire Department was also called in and ultimately managed to extinguish the fire. Azzarello was then rushed to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition.
Tragic Outcome
Despite the efforts to save him, the NYPD confirmed that Azzarello tragically passed away on Friday night. The incident also resulted in minor injuries to four officers who responded to the scene.
Conspiracy Theory Allegations
Officials revealed that Azzarello had posted a statement on social media prior to the incident. While the incident occurred near the courthouse where Trump’s trial is taking place, authorities stated that Azzarello did not seem to be targeting any specific individual or group. He was described as a conspiracy theorist by officials.
