Accident – Death – Obituary News :

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A thin manatee found trapped in a retention pond system in St. Petersburg has been rescued for the second time, as reported by the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

Last week, ZooTampa at Lowry Park, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office joined forces to rescue the manatee from the Clam Bayou. The collaborative effort successfully rescued the animal, which was then given a thorough examination before being transported to safety.

Rescue Operation

During the rescue operation, FWC staff scanned for PIT tags, which are commonly used by veterinarians to help identify and reunite lost pets. The manatee, known as “Flapjack,” was first rescued and rehabilitated in 2021 after being discovered in a severely emaciated state in the Weeki Watchee River.

After receiving care at ZooTampa at Lowry Park, Flapjack was released back into the wild in 2022. However, due to his ongoing health concerns and thin condition, he was later transferred to SeaWorld for further rehabilitation.

Continued Care

The collaborative efforts of various wildlife organizations and law enforcement agencies demonstrate the dedication to preserving the well-being of Florida’s manatee population. Through ongoing monitoring and rehabilitation efforts, manatees like Flapjack have the opportunity to recover and thrive in their natural habitats.

As we continue to witness the resilience of these gentle giants, it is crucial to support conservation initiatives and raise awareness about the importance of protecting these endangered species.
