Accident – Death – Obituary News :

About the Incident

Two teenagers, aged 16 and 14, have been arrested in Rukungiri District on murder charges after allegedly assaulting their colleague to death. The tragic incident occurred on Friday afternoon at Rwenkuba Hill in Kagashe Cell, Bugangari Sub-county.

The Victim

The victim, identified as 18-year-old Derrick Niwahereza, hailed from Bugorogoro Cell, Nyakagyeme Sub-county in the same district. The events leading to his untimely demise unfolded during what was supposed to be a casual kickboxing game between three teenagers grazing cattle.

The Alleged Attack

According to police reports, the 16-year-old suspect delivered a fatal kick to Niwahereza, causing him to fall to the ground in pain. In retaliation, Niwahereza picked up a stone and struck his assailant on the chest. The situation escalated when the 16-year-old grabbed a sharp grazing stick and fatally struck Niwahereza on the head, resulting in his tragic demise.

The Aftermath

Following the assault, both suspects allegedly left Niwahereza bleeding and unconscious at the scene before retreating to their respective homes. The incident came to light when a local farmer, Amston Rukundo, discovered the victim and reported the matter to Internal Security Officer Mini Onzo.

Community Response

Rukungiri District officials, including LCV chairman Geoffrey Kyomukama and the district Community Development Officer Posius Nemesius Agaba, have highlighted the concerning rise in criminal cases involving teenage offenders. They attributed such incidents to factors such as drug abuse, school dropout, and parental neglect in instilling moral values.

Preventive Measures

In response to the alarming trend, the district authorities have launched sensitization campaigns through FM radios and community meetings to educate parents on the importance of keeping their children in school and discouraging harmful behaviours like drug abuse and violence. The aim is to create a safer and more responsible environment for the youth.
