Search Underway for Missing Kayakers in Sidney, B.C.

Authorities in Sidney, B.C., just north of Victoria, are currently conducting a search for two missing kayakers. The Sidney/North Saanich RCMP has reached out to the public for assistance in locating two individuals who were last seen kayaking from D’Arcy Island to View Beach on Saturday afternoon.

The Missing Men

The two men, identified as Daniel MacAlpine, aged 36, and Nicholas West, aged 26, were reportedly in a teal blue fibreglass, two-person, tandem kayak at the time of their disappearance. Efforts to locate them have been ongoing.

Search Efforts

Multiple agencies are involved in the search operation, including members of the Central Saanich Police Department and the Peninsula Emergency Measures Organization search and rescue teams. Additionally, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre and the Canadian Coast Guard are providing assistance in the search efforts.

The Location

D’Arcy Island, situated in Haro Strait approximately 17 kilometres from Victoria, holds historical significance as a former leprosy colony from 1891 to 1924. Today, it is part of a national park reserve and serves as a popular destination for kayakers and campers alike.

As the search continues, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Daniel MacAlpine and Nicholas West to come forward and assist in the efforts to locate the missing kayakers.
