Rescued Turtle Recovering After Fish Hook Incident in Buxton

A remarkable rescue effort has saved the life of a turtle found with a fish hook lodged in its neck at Daisy Nook Country Park. Thanks to the quick actions of Middleton resident Deborah Taylor, the distressed reptile, now named Daisy, is on the road to recovery at a rescue centre in Buxton.

Deborah first came across distressing images of the turtle on social media and knew she had to help. She had previously seen Daisy happily wandering around the park, making the sight even more upsetting. Determined to alleviate the animal’s suffering, she reached out to turtle rescue groups for assistance.

The turtle, identified as a female yellow belly slider likely abandoned as a pet, faced a precarious situation due to its invasive nature. Deborah highlighted the challenges of rehoming such turtles, noting that they had been in Daisy Nook for a significant period.

Following a swift response from rescue teams, Daisy was safely located and taken to Chris Hallam’s rescue centre in Buxton. There, she joins 150 fellow rescued turtles and receives the necessary care to heal from her ordeal.

Daisy underwent surgery to remove the fish hook and is currently recovering well, although she is experiencing some difficulty with eating. Despite this, her caretakers are optimistic about her progress and expect her to make a full recovery once she resumes normal feeding.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by discarded fishing tackle to wildlife, with the RSPCA emphasising the need for responsible disposal of such items. Daisy’s story is a testament to the power of community action and compassion in protecting vulnerable animals.
