Tragic Incident Unfolds Near Dubbo

Over the weekend, a tragic incident occurred outside Dubbo, NSW, that left many people in shock. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Rod Smith provided details of the events that unfolded on Saturday morning, starting with a call regarding a domestic incident at 8:45am.

Police Response

As police were en route to the domestic incident, they spotted a Mazda sedan leaving the scene. The driver of the vehicle was identified as being involved in the domestic incident. Attempts to stop the Mazda were made around 9:15am on the Mitchell Highway near Dubbo, but the driver failed to comply, leading to a pursuit that was called off due to safety concerns.

Tragic Collision

Unfortunately, the pursuit ended in tragedy when the Mazda sedan crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a bus near the intersection of Mitchell Highway and Eulomogo Road. The driver of the Mazda, a 32-year-old man, lost his life in the collision. The bus driver, a 50-year-old woman, managed to take evasive action, potentially saving the lives of many passengers on board.

Emergency Response

NSW Ambulance responded to the scene, assessing 26 individuals and transporting eight to Dubbo Base Hospital in stable condition. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the bus passengers and driver were minor and non-life-threatening. Ambulances were deployed to assist individuals ranging in age from 10 to their 80s.

Investigation Underway

A crime scene has been established, with specialist police from the crash investigation unit working on the case. The investigation will undergo an independent review, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. The closure of the highway in both directions is expected to last for several hours as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic collision.
