In a tragic incident that shook the residents of Mookandam village near Jawalagiri, a 65-year-old man named P Siddhalingappa met with a horrifying end when he was trampled to death by a wild elephant on Thursday morning. The incident took place near the Ulibenda reserved forest, sending shockwaves throughout the community.
Details of the Incident
According to Jawalagiri forest ranger K Arivalagan, the unfortunate victim was grazing his cattle when he came face to face with the majestic yet dangerous creature. The elephant, which had strayed from the nearby reserve forest, attacked Siddhalingappa without warning, leading to his untimely demise.
Response from Authorities
Upon receiving the distressing news, the forest department swiftly responded by dispatching a team to the scene of the tragedy. Siddhalingappa’s body was then transported to Denkanikottai government hospital for autopsy, as per standard procedure. In a gesture of compassion, a compensation cheque worth Rs 50,000 was presented to the grieving family, with an additional Rs 9.50 lakh promised upon the submission of necessary documents.
Community Awareness Programs
It was revealed that the forest department had conducted several awareness programmes in the past to educate villagers residing in close proximity to the forest. Residents of Madakkal, Sulakunta, Mookandam, and surrounding villages were specifically warned about the potential danger posed by roaming elephants, in an effort to prevent further tragic incidents.
As the residents of Mookandam village grapple with the loss of one of their own, the haunting memory of the wild elephant’s deadly rampage serves as a somber reminder of the delicate balance between man and nature.
