In a recent development in Memphis, a 17-year-old suspect involved in a shootout with police has been identified as Devaron Taylor, according to court documents obtained by Action News 5.

Location of Incident

The incident took place in Southwest Memphis, where Taylor and now-deceased 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley were allegedly involved in a shootout on April 12. The shootout resulted in the death of Officer Joseph McKinney and injured two other MPD officers.

Details of the Incident

It all began when police received multiple calls about a suspicious car in the area around 2 a.m. The car was determined to be stolen. When officers approached the vehicle, gunfire erupted, resulting in five people being struck, including both teenage suspects and three police officers.

Charges Against Taylor

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office will be filing a motion to transfer Taylor to be charged as an adult. Taylor’s charges include criminal attempt first-degree murder, assault against a first responder, and aggravated assault. Additional charges include theft of property, possessing a firearm, attempting to commit a dangerous felony, and evading arrest. Altogether, these charges carry a potential maximum sentence of 400 years.
