In a heartbreaking turn of events, a young pilot from Minnesota, identified as Alexander Foss, tragically lost his life in a small plane crash in northwest Indiana. The incident, which occurred on April 11, has left the Purdue University community in mourning.

Identification of the Victim

Authorities confirmed that Alexander Foss, a 20-year-old student from Maple Grove, was the pilot of the single-engine Piper PA-28 that crashed in a field northwest of Lafayette. The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office used DNA provided by relatives to positively identify Foss as the victim of the fatal crash.

Investigation Continues

The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office, alongside the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration, are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The wreckage was discovered the day after the incident, approximately 60 miles north of Indianapolis.

A junior majoring in aviation flight at Purdue University, Alexander Foss was a promising young student with a passion for flying. School spokesperson Tim Doty expressed the university’s deepest sympathies to Foss’s family, friends, and the entire Purdue community during this difficult time.

Foss had rented the aircraft from Purdue Aviation before taking off from Purdue University Airport. Unfortunately, the flight ended in tragedy when the plane crashed in a remote field.
