Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Discovery of Human Remains Along Interstate 20 in Texas

Back on Oct. 1, 1985, a Texas Department of Transportation crew made a startling discovery while mowing along Interstate 20. What they found were human remains that had been there for over a year, based on the condition of the bones. Despite numerous leads over the past 38 years, the identity of the young woman remained a mystery.

Identification of “Jane Doe” as Sindy Gina Crow

After nearly four decades since the remains were found, authorities have finally identified the victim as Sindy Gina Crow, a woman from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. During a press briefing at the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Larry Smith announced that the case has been classified as a homicide due to the way her clothes were found next to her body. However, determining the cause of death has proven difficult due to the extent of decay. Her last known contact with family was in 1984, but now, the family can finally have closure.

Efforts to Solve the Mystery

Sheriff Smith commended Detective David Turner for his unwavering dedication to solving the case. Turner’s proactive approach led him to the DNA Doe Project in 2021. This nonprofit organization specializes in using DNA ancestry searches to identify unknown remains. With the help of 15 volunteers, led by Rhonda Kevorkian, the team used investigative genetic genealogy to build family trees and track down relatives of the victim.

Breakthrough in the Case

In November 2023, the DNA Doe Project informed Turner of a breakthrough. Through their research, they discovered that Sindy Gina Crow was born on Sept. 12, 1957. She was a daughter, mother, and wife. Turner managed to track down her daughter, who confirmed that her DNA was a positive match to the remains found back in 1985. Crow, described as a drifter, was never reported missing by her family, who were unaware of her marriage and child.

Bringing Closure Through Identification

Thanks to the dedication of Detective Turner, Sindy Gina Crow has finally been identified after all these years. Turner, who often worked on the investigation in his own time, never gave up on solving the case. While many questions surrounding Crow’s murder may remain unanswered, her family can now lay her to rest with the dignity she deserves.
