Montclair Mother Charged After Shooting Officer During Standoff

A New Jersey mother of two has been charged after allegedly shooting an officer in Montclair during a standoff with police, authorities said.

Incident Details

The shooting took place around 1:10 p.m. when officers responded to reports of an armed person on the 100 block of Forest Street in Montclair. As they approached the residence, the suspect inside, identified as Maryann Swain, opened fire on the police, hitting officer Michael Medrano in the shoulder.

Witness Account

A witness told ABC 7 that Swain emerged from the residence with a shotgun, claiming the area as her territory, before shooting at the officers. In response, another officer fired back, injuring the suspect.

Medical Attention

Both Officer Medrano, 33, and Swain, 39, were taken to University Hospital in Newark with non-life-threatening injuries. Medrano has since been released, while Swain remains hospitalized for treatment.

Family Situation

Swain, who moved into the neighborhood approximately six months ago, is the mother of two young children. Reports indicate that her children were present at the scene during the shooting.

Charges and Response

Swain has been charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy expressed his concern for the injured officer and commended the bravery of law enforcement officials.

Investigation Underway

State Attorney General Matt Platkin has stated that his office is working closely with law enforcement and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
