Man Killed in Madang Shootout
A young man named Fabian Morris, aged 24 and hailing from Mundu village in Madang, met his end in a dramatic gun battle at the Kubai junction. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday morning between 6.15am and 6.30am, when police officers from the Northern Mobile Group (NMG) found themselves facing a group of armed criminals.
Details of the Incident
The Northern Mobile Group, on a routine escort duty at Glass House, encountered a group of approximately 10 armed criminals at Kubai Junction. These criminals were armed with homemade guns, bush knives, and wire catapults, and they attempted to ambush the Assert Protection Officer (APD) vehicle by firing wire catapults at it.
Despite the initial attack, the APD managed to maneuver through the situation. Officers in the rear car witnessed the incident and swiftly responded by engaging the armed suspects. One suspect aimed a homemade gun at an officer, while another attacked the first car with a wire catapult, lodging it in the left side door.
Response and Outcome
The Madang Transnational Crime and National Criminal Intelligence Units were alerted by the officers, and upon arrival at the scene, confirmed the identities of the assailants. They also provided assistance to the wounded, who were swiftly transported to Modilon General Hospital Accident and Emergency.
Unfortunately, approximately an hour later, the hospital staff reported that the wounded suspect had succumbed to his injuries. The deceased’s body was then taken to the morgue after being pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
Police Warning
Superintendent Robert Baim, acting Police Commander, issued a stern warning to criminals who dare to challenge the law. He emphasized that such disrespectful behavior towards law-abiding citizens will not be tolerated. The police express their frustration with such incidents, stating that they are fed up.
Baim made it clear that if individuals are armed and pose a threat to innocent lives, the police will not hesitate to take action to protect the community. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
