Accident – Death – Obituary News :

On Sunday night, tragedy struck in Liverpool, N.Y., as two police officers lost their lives in a shootout with a gunman outside a house in a lakeside suburb of Salina. The fallen heroes have been identified as Syracuse police officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff Lt. Michael Hoosock. The gunman, Christopher Murphy, 33, was also killed in the exchange of fire.

The Incident

The ordeal began when Jensen and another Syracuse police officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on a suspicious Honda Civic. The car evaded the officers at speeds exceeding 100 mph, but they managed to track down the vehicle to a residence in Liverpool. Sheriff Toby Shelley of Onondaga County responded to a call for assistance from the Syracuse police.

As the officers investigated the property, they heard movement around the house and the distinct sound of a gun being manipulated. Hoosock, seeking cover, was ambushed in the backyard by Murphy, who was standing on the porch. Meanwhile, Jensen was struck by gunfire as he took cover around the property. In the ensuing exchange of bullets, Murphy was fatally shot by the returning officers.

The Aftermath

Both Jensen and Hoosock were rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. Murphy was also pronounced dead at the hospital. Police Chief Joe Cecile expressed his grief, stating, “We lost two heroes last night, two men who raised their hands and answered the call of duty to protect and serve their communities.”

Jensen, a dedicated officer with two years of service, was known for his ambition and hard work. Hoosock, who had been with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s office since 2007 and was recently promoted to lieutenant, leaves behind a wife and three young children.

Final Thoughts

In the wake of this tragic loss, the Syracuse community mourns the sacrifice made by these brave law enforcement officers. Their dedication to serving and protecting the public will forever be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of Michael Jensen and Michael Hoosock, as well as to all those affected by this devastating event.
