Montclair Woman Charged with Aggravated Assault in Shooting Incident

A Montclair woman is facing charges of aggravated assault and other offenses after a shooting incident that left a Montclair police officer injured. The incident took place on Monday at a residence on the 100 block of Forest Street in Montclair.

Details of the Incident

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Montclair Police officers were dispatched to the residence at around 1:09 p.m. following reports of an armed individual. As the officers approached the residence, they were met with gunfire. Officer Michael J. Medrano, aged 33, was struck in the shoulder area during the exchange. Another officer returned fire, injuring the suspect.

Recovery and Charges

Both the injured officer and the suspect were taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries. The injured officer has since been released from the hospital. The suspect, identified as Maryann Swain, 39, of Montclair, has been charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Swain is currently hospitalized and will be held in the Essex County Correctional Facility upon release for her appearance in Essex County Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court.
