Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Residents of Liptovsky Mikulas, a town near the Tatra mountains in northern Slovakia, were left in shock as a 10-year-old girl and four other individuals were injured in the second bear attack in just three days. The incident has led to a state of emergency being declared in the area.

State of Emergency Declared

The town of Liptovsky Mikulas has been on high alert after footage surfaced showing a large brown bear attacking residents. This comes shortly after a 31-year-old Belarussian woman, identified as Tatiana, was found dead following another bear sighting in the vicinity.

Victims of the Attack

Among the injured in the latest attack are a 49-year-old woman being treated in hospital for a shoulder injury, a 72-year-old man with a cut on his head, a 10-year-old girl, and two other adults with scratches and bruises. Fortunately, a couple pushing their child in a buggy managed to escape unharmed.

Emergency Response

Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors, especially during early and late hours, as animal hunters have been deployed to locate and eliminate the bear responsible for the attacks. Hunters, police patrols, and bear emergency teams are actively patrolling the area to ensure the safety of the community.

Environmental Impact

Brown bears have been returning to their natural habitats in Slovakia due to improved environmental protection measures. However, this has led to an increase in bear attacks in recent years. The country now has an estimated population of 1,275 bears, with calls from government officials to relax the endangered species status to allow culling and hunting.

Proposed Solutions

Slovakian authorities, including junior environment minister Filip Kuffa, have proposed a draft law to allow bears to be shot outside urban areas under specific conditions. They aim to propose a reclassification of the species at the European Union level, in collaboration with Romania, to address the growing bear population.
