Details of the Collision

The crash unfolded when a 2023 BMW sedan, travelling east towards Hilo, attempted to overtake vehicles and collided head-on with a 2013 Ford SUV heading west towards Kona. The impact of the collision sent the Ford careening into a 2007 Chevy pickup truck that was travelling in the opposite direction. The aftermath of the crash left all three vehicles severely damaged.

Injuries and Casualties

Among those involved in the collision were a 69-year-old man from Pahoa who was driving the BMW sedan, an 85-year-old man from Keauhou who was operating the Ford SUV, and a 65-year-old man from Pahoa who was behind the wheel of the Chevy pickup. Tragically, the front-seat passenger of the Ford SUV, identified as 80-year-old Diane Pittman from Keauhou, was found unresponsive at the scene. She was transported to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of her death. It was revealed that the occupants of the Ford SUV were all related.
