An unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, March 8, around 2:50 p.m. when a UH-72 Lakota helicopter crashed near the US-Mexico border close to Rio Grande City, Texas. The Joint Task Force North reported the incident, which resulted in the critical injury of Capital Region native Jacob Pratt from Rensselaer.

Victims and Fundraising Efforts

Following the crash, more than $102,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign initiated by the New York State Council of School Superintendents. The fundraiser aims to support Jacob Pratt, who sustained severe injuries in the crash, including multiple broken bones such as fractures in his back, ribs, leg, and pelvis. Pratt is currently undergoing treatment in Texas, facing a long and challenging road to recovery.

In addition to Pratt, National Guard soldier Casey Frankoski, aged 28, and New York State Police trooper John M. Grassia III, aged 30, were identified as victims of the tragic incident along with a Border Patrol agent.

Remembering the Fallen Heroes

Casey Frankoski, a graduate of Columbia High School in East Greenbush, was praised for her excellence in academics, sports, and community service before joining the New York National Guard. Her family’s legacy of public service resonates throughout the community, with her father, retired Rensselaer Police Chief James Frankoski, also being recognized for his dedication.

John M. Grassia III, who joined the New York State Police in April 2022 and served in Troop G (Latham) in Albany County, will be remembered for his commitment to protecting both New York State and the entire United States.

State Mourning and Support

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed deep sorrow at the loss of the three individuals, emphasizing the significant sacrifice made by service members in ensuring the security of the state and the nation. The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association also paid tribute to Trooper Grassia for his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
