Man Arrested After Baseball Bat Attack at Idaho Falls Elementary School

A 29-year-old man, Ricardo Arellano-Orta, has been taken into custody after allegedly assaulting multiple individuals with a baseball bat at AH Bush Elementary School in Idaho Falls.

Incident at AH Bush Elementary School

The incident took place on Monday afternoon around 3:10 p.m. when Idaho Falls Police responded to reports of a man wielding a baseball bat at a car outside the school premises.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Arellano-Orta driving away in a black Ford Fusion. Despite their efforts to intercept the vehicle, the suspect managed to evade capture, heading west on West Anderson Street.

Threats and Aggressive Behaviour

Witnesses at the scene, including a relative of Arellano-Orta, revealed that he had been exhibiting threatening behaviour towards them. The relative recounted an incident earlier that day where Arellano-Orta allegedly attempted to run him over with the Ford Fusion.

Subsequently, Arellano-Orta confronted the relative at the elementary school, brandishing a white and silver baseball bat while making menacing remarks. The witnesses expressed fear of Arellano-Orta due to his erratic actions.

Police Intervention and Arrest

Later in the day, authorities received a call reporting further threats from Arellano-Orta on Whispering Pines Drive. An officer successfully apprehended him near 12th Street and Woodruff Avenue, where he was detained for questioning.

During the interview, Arellano-Orta claimed that he had gone to the school to speak with the witnesses, alleging that the relative had threatened his life. He admitted to brandishing the baseball bat but denied seeing any weapon on the relative.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Following a search of Arellano-Orta’s vehicle, law enforcement recovered a Louisville Slugger bat matching the description provided by witnesses. Additionally, multiple bank cards belonging to one of the victims were found in his possession.

Arellano-Orta was subsequently charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or instrument and booked into Bonneville County Jail on a $40,000 bond. A no-contact order has been issued for the victims, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 22.

While Arellano-Orta faces serious allegations, it is essential to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
