Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Marion County Sheriff’s Office detectives have determined that the tragic death of a man found in a mobile home fire a few months ago was, in fact, a suicide. The man, identified as 56-year-old Leroy Edward Berka of Ocala, died from acute carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation and soot from the fire. The Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that the manner of death was suicide, based on their investigation.

**Details of the Incident**

The incident took place at 7720 SW 19th Place, near West Port High School, in Ocala. Deputy Stephan Michaelides responded to a call about a fire at the location shortly after 1 a.m. on Jan. 30. Upon arrival, the mobile home was fully engulfed in flames, and a neighbor informed the deputy that a man lived at the residence. Despite Deputy Michaelides’ attempts to make contact, there was no response from inside the burning home. Firefighters later arrived at the scene and managed to rescue Berka from the blaze, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

**Investigation Findings**

Detectives conducting the investigation found evidence that Berka had intentionally set the residence and surrounding property on fire. They noted that there was no indication of anyone else being involved in starting the fire. The report revealed that Berka’s body showed signs of smoke inhalation and burns, suggesting that he was alive during the fire. Additionally, traces of an accelerant were found on his shoes and socks.

**Possible Motive**

According to interviews with neighbours and acquaintances, Berka had recently been asked to vacate the property by a woman who was set to inherit it. It was reported that Berka had been living in a shed nearby after being unable to afford his previous accommodation. The woman confirmed that Berka knew about the impending transfer of ownership and had been informed that he would have to leave the property within six months.

**Final Thoughts**

The tragic circumstances surrounding Leroy Edward Berka’s death serve as a reminder of the complex nature of mental health and personal struggles. The authorities have concluded their investigation into the incident, and the details uncovered shed light on the challenges faced by individuals in difficult situations. Our thoughts go out to Berka’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
