The Tragic Shooting of a New Mexico State Police Officer

In a devastating turn of events, a New Mexico state police officer, Justin Hare, was fatally shot on Interstate 40 in eastern New Mexico. The incident took place near mile marker 320, approximately 50 miles west of the Texas state line. The victim, Officer Hare, was just 35 years old at the time of his untimely death.

A Desperate Search for the Suspect

Following the shooting, multiple law enforcement agencies launched a search for the suspect responsible. The assailant was last seen on foot, wearing a brown hoodie and jacket, on the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, which is located about 30 miles west of Tucumcari.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating, “It’s a tragic reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face each time they put on a uniform and report for duty.” Cabinet Secretary Jason Bowie echoed these sentiments, emphasising that Officer Hare’s sacrifice should never be forgotten.

According to reports, Officer Hare was conducting a welfare check on the interstate when he encountered a vehicle pulled over onto the shoulder of the traffic lanes. The situation quickly escalated, leading to the fatal shooting that has left the community in shock and mourning.

State police have issued a warning to the public, urging anyone who may come into contact with the armed and dangerous suspect to refrain from approaching and to immediately call 911. The search for the perpetrator continues as authorities work tirelessly to bring them to justice.
