A man from Evansville is facing serious charges after a tragic incident unfolded at a home on South Morton Avenue. Jason Duwann Mortez Horne, 44, has been preliminarily charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a serious felon, following an incident where a child called 911 to report that he believed his mother had been shot and killed. The victim, an adult woman, had not been publicly identified as of Friday afternoon.

Details of the Incident

The incident took place in the 1600 block of South Morton Avenue, where Evansville police were dispatched after receiving a call from a child who stated that his mother may have been shot. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the woman with a gunshot wound in the stomach area. Despite efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Investigation and Arrest

As the investigation unfolded, officers spoke with Horne, who claimed to have no recollection of the shooting. However, evidence at the scene indicated that the victim had not shot herself, as initially claimed by Horne. A Glock 9mm firearm was found in the room, leading to Horne’s arrest based on the evidence and his own statements. He was taken into custody and booked into the Vanderburgh County jail on the charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a serious felon.
