Abdul Kamara : Man Who Died In Sheriff’s Custody Identified: Combative Arrest

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a man has tragically passed away in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Encinitas. The incident occurred two weeks ago after an altercation with deputies who were arresting him on suspicion of public intoxication. The man, identified as Abdul Kamara, 29, suffered a medical crisis that led to his untimely death.

The events unfolded when patrol personnel responded to a report of a shoeless and shirtless man crawling around a parking lot in the 800 block of Birmingham Drive late at night on March 2. Abdul Kamara was taken into custody on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Deputies Alejandro Aguilera and Tyler Phillips transported him to Vista Detention Facility.

During the journey, Kamara started behaving erratically, injuring himself and managing to move his cuffed hands from behind his back to the front. Deputies had to reposition his restraints and call in a paramedic to assess his condition.

Despite efforts to control Kamara, he became increasingly agitated and began kicking and flailing against the deputies. After being subdued and put into full-body restraint gear, he suddenly lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Paramedics on the scene initiated lifesaving measures and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Following the tragic incident, the SDPD Homicide Unit will conduct a thorough investigation into Kamara’s death. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will review the case to determine if any criminal liability is present. Additionally, internal investigations will be carried out by the Sheriff’s Department, with oversight from the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
