Discovering the Forgotten Hero of Old Town, Maine

Located in the picturesque town of Old Town, Maine, a remarkable discovery has recently shed light on a forgotten hero from the past. Wednesday, March 13, marked a significant milestone – 160 years since Penobscot County Deputy Sheriff Thomas Smith tragically lost his life in the line of duty back in 1864.

A Journey of Rediscovery

It was not until very recently that the details surrounding Deputy Sheriff Thomas Smith’s death came to light. In early 2023, retired Biddeford Detective John Gill embarked on a mission to unearth historical records that could provide insight into this long-forgotten chapter of Maine’s law enforcement history.

Unveiling the Past

After months of meticulous research, Detective Gill presented his findings to a gathering of sheriff’s office command staff and detectives in February. The reports from that era were described as “captivating,” painting a vivid picture of Smith’s valiant efforts as a sought-after lawman in the state.

A Hero’s Final Stand

Smith’s bravery knew no bounds as he journeyed from Penobscot County to Aroostook County to apprehend a dangerous individual from Washington County. Tragically, during a harrowing gun and knife battle, Smith was fatally stabbed at the age of 53. The desperado responsible for his death met a similar fate, succumbing to his injuries while in custody.

Preserving a Legacy

In honour of Smith’s sacrifice, members of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office paid tribute to him on the anniversary of his passing. They visited the Forest Hill Cemetery in Old Town to locate Smith’s final resting place, where they found overturned and partially buried stone markers. Plans are underway to restore the site and seek assistance with the preservation efforts. Furthermore, an application will be submitted to have Smith commemorated on the National and State Law Enforcement Memorial walls, ensuring that his legacy endures for generations to come.
