MILAN, Ill. (KWQC) – A startling incident occurred on I-280 in Milan, Illinois, near milepost 13.5, involving an Illinois State Police squad car. According to a media release from ISP, a driver collided with the squad car, although fortunately, no injuries were reported and the driver was cited.

Details of the Incident

On Wednesday morning at around 7:29 a.m., ISP officials responded to a traffic crash involving an ISP trooper’s squad car that was struck by a motorist who failed to move over. The ISP squad car was parked on the right shoulder of I-280 eastbound near milepost 13.5 with its emergency lights on, as the trooper was assisting another motorist. While the trooper was inside the squad car, it was sideswiped by a truck-tractor semi-trailer. Shockingly, the truck did not stop after the collision and continued eastbound on I-280.

Identification and Citation

The trooper’s squad car remained drivable, allowing them to follow the truck. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver of the truck-tractor semi-trailer was identified as Mark V. Powell, a 65-year-old from Columbus, Ohio. Powell was issued a citation for the Move Over Law violation, specifically for failing to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle.

Statistics and Consequences

In the year 2022, ISP recorded a total of 23 Move Over Law-related crashes, resulting in eight troopers sustaining injuries. This alarming statistic highlights the importance of adhering to traffic laws, especially when it comes to ensuring the safety of emergency responders on the road.
