Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a surprising discovery, a woman’s skeletal remains were unearthed in a shallow grave alongside a man’s back in 1974 in Connecticut, as reported by troopers. The DNA testing that took place recently helped to finally identify her after 50 long years as Linda Sue Childers hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, according to a news release from the Connecticut State Police on March 13.

The Discovery

It was on May 30, 1974, that Childers’ remains were found in a shallow grave close to a residence in Ledyard, as per the police statement. The tragic incident that led to their deaths occurred on December 31, 1970, as revealed by troopers, and it was a witness who directed the authorities to the burial site.

The Man She was Found With

The man who was found with Childers was identified as Gustavous Lee Carmichael, as stated by DNASolves. He was known to be a convicted serial bank robber, adding another layer of intrigue to this already mysterious case.

The Identification Process

Initially, Childers was identified by her alias, meaning her true identity was still shrouded in mystery, the police disclosed. The individuals responsible for their deaths were apprehended, tried, and subsequently passed away, according to law enforcement officials.

Authorities’ Struggle to Identify Childers

Over the years, the authorities made several attempts to ascertain Childers’ identity. In 2011, case data was submitted to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, along with dental X-rays. A year later, her DNA was included in the Combined DNA Index System, a federal database, but unfortunately, no matches were found.

Breakthrough in 2022

Fast forward to 2022, and a breakthrough finally occurred. A sample of Childers’ DNA was extracted, sequenced, and uploaded into a forensic investigative genetic genealogy database by Othram, a laboratory based in The Woodlands, Texas, renowned for its expertise in this field. Investigators managed to identify Childers’ sister in January, who subsequently provided a DNA sample that confirmed the remains belonged to Childers.

It’s heartening to see closure being brought to this long-standing case, finally allowing Linda Sue Childers to be laid to rest with dignity after five decades of uncertainty and speculation.
