On the morning of March 6, 2024, tragedy struck in Highlands Ranch, CO., as deputies responded to a devastating automobile versus pedestrian crash at the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Venneford Ranch Road. The victim, identified as 13-year-old Alexander Mackiewicz, lost his life in the incident, leaving behind a grieving family and a community in mourning.
Details of the Investigation
The Douglas County Traffic Team was called in to investigate the accident thoroughly. Through their meticulous work, they were able to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
The Sequence of Events
According to the investigation report, the vehicle involved was travelling eastbound on Highlands Ranch Parkway towards the intersection with Venneford Ranch Road. The traffic signal at the intersection was red, indicating a stop for eastbound traffic.
Meanwhile, Alexander Mackiewicz, known as Alex, was crossing Highlands Ranch Parkway in the southbound crosswalk on Venneford Ranch Road. The walk signal was activated, allowing Alex to proceed through the intersection.
Tragically, the vehicle entered the intersection despite the red signal and struck Alex on the opposite side of the intersection. The impact caused Alex to be ejected off his “Onewheel” and come to rest against the curb line east of the intersection.
Driver’s Charges
The driver, identified as Ruben Morones, was taken into custody and faces charges including Careless Driving Caused Death, Careless Driving Caused Serious Bodily Injury to a Vulnerable Road User, and Failure to Obey Traffic Control Signal.
