Man Arrested After Violent Altercation with NYPD Officers in Queens Shelter

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has defended the actions of NYPD officers during a violent altercation at a city-operated shelter in Queens. The incident, which was captured on camera, involved officers striking and using a stun gun on a migrant identified as 47-year-old Yanny Cordero while he was holding his 1-year-old child.

Details of the Incident

According to a police source, the use of the stun gun was a “dry stun” to eliminate any risk to the child. The child was reported to be unharmed during the altercation. The NYPD stated that they were called to the shelter on March 8 due to a dispute involving an intoxicated and disorderly male threatening staff members. Cordero allegedly refused to give the child to someone else despite multiple commands.

Arrest and Charges

Cordero was arrested on charges including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, and endangering the welfare of a child. His wife, Andrea Parrar, was also arrested for resisting arrest, obstructing government administration, and disorderly conduct. Parrar reportedly interfered with the arrest and pushed several officers.

Family’s Reunion

Following the incident, Mayor Adams’ office stated that the family was reunited and given a new placement in Brooklyn after requesting to be moved to a different shelter. City officials are currently investigating the incident to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.

Response and Advocacy

The New York Immigration Coalition condemned the arrests and called for a thorough investigation into the use of force by the NYPD officers. They emphasized the importance of culturally competent shelter staff to prevent misunderstandings that could lead to violence. Mayor Adams, on the other hand, expressed his support for the officers’ actions, stating that they acted appropriately in a volatile situation.

As the investigation continues, the community awaits further updates on the incident and the actions taken by city officials to address the concerns raised by advocates and residents.
