Violent Altercation at City-Operated Shelter in Queens

In a recent incident at a city-operated shelter in the borough of Queens, New York City, NYPD officers were involved in a violent altercation with a migrant that was captured on camera. The incident occurred on March 8, when officers were called to a dispute with an intoxicated and disorderly male threatening staff members at the shelter.

Details of the Altercation

The man, identified as 47-year-old Yanny Cordero, was seen in a video obtained by The New York Times being repeatedly struck and tased by officers while holding his 1-year-old child. The police deployed a “dry stun,” a method where the taser is held to the suspect without firing probes, to avoid harming the child. The child was reported to be unharmed during the incident.

Despite multiple commands to hand over the child, Cordero refused, leading to a physical struggle with officers. The video shows three officers wrestling him to the ground and pinning him against a desk, with one officer punching him in the face. Cordero’s wife, Andrea Parrar, also got involved in the altercation, leading to her arrest for interfering with the arrest.

Charges and Reunion

Cordero was arrested on multiple charges, including disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and endangering the welfare of a child. His wife, Parrar, was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing government administration, and disorderly conduct.

Following the incident, the family was reunited and given a new placement in Brooklyn after requesting to be moved to a new shelter. The Administration for Children’s Services was notified regarding the couple’s three children who were present during the altercation.

Response and Investigation

Mayor Eric Adams stated that the NYPD officers took “appropriate action” during the altercation, believing that they acted in response to Cordero’s violent behavior. However, the New York Immigration Coalition condemned the arrest, calling for a thorough investigation into the use of force by the officers.

City officials are currently investigating the incident, with Mayor Adams’ office assuring that the health and safety of migrants in their care, especially young children, is a top priority. The Queens District Attorney’s office is leading the inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the violent altercation at the city-operated shelter in Queens.
