Alleged Police Brutality Leads to Tragic Death of TUT Student

In a devastating turn of events, a second-year Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) engineering student, Thabelo Mbau, lost his life after sustaining injuries in an alleged assault by police officers at the Khayalethu Student Residence in eMalahleni.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the incident, which has sparked outrage among the student community at TUT.

IPID Investigation Underway

According to IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, a post mortem was conducted on Mbau to determine the cause of death. Seven individuals have been interviewed and provided statements regarding the events that transpired on 8th March 2024.

Shuping emphasized the importance of a thorough and impartial investigation to uncover the truth behind Mbau’s tragic demise. IPID has called on the public to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation.

University Response and Support

TUT is awaiting the official report from IPID and has extended support to Mbau’s family and friends during this difficult time. The university has urged respect for the family’s privacy as they mourn the loss of their loved one.

In a statement, TUT expressed its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow students of the deceased student.

Protests Erupt at TUT Campus

Following Mbau’s tragic death, TUT students and structures gathered at the eMalahleni Campus for a march against police brutality. The protest escalated, with reports of students throwing stones at police officers, leading to clashes and the use of rubber bullets.

Witbank News reported that some students were injured and hospitalized as a result of the confrontation. The students presented a list of grievances, demanding the immediate arrest of all officers implicated in the incident.
