A bizarre incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, March 10, in East Hartford, Connecticut, when a wrong-way driver collided with a police cruiser that was attempting to intercept him.

Details of the Incident

The driver, identified as 69-year-old Robert John Washam, was initially spotted travelling westbound on the eastbound side of Route 2. His reckless journey continued as he then proceeded to drive southbound on the northbound side of Route 5/15.

Connecticut State Police revealed that Washam was “travelling the wrong way in the right shoulder” when his vehicle collided with the State Police cruiser.

Upon approaching the scene, law enforcement officers noted that Washam appeared uncooperative and exhibited signs of intoxication. He was promptly arrested and subjected to standardized field sobriety tests, which he reportedly failed to perform satisfactorily.

Criminal Charges

As a result of his actions, Washam now faces a total of eight criminal charges, including reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer, suspicion of DUI, failure to drive in the proper lane, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, illegal entry onto a limited access highway, resisting arrest, and reckless endangerment.

He is currently being held in custody on a $75,000 bond, awaiting further legal proceedings.

No Injuries Reported

Fortunately, despite the severity of the collision, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Both Washam and the law enforcement officers involved emerged unscathed from the crash.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and the events leading up to it.
