The Tragic Death of Nex Benedict in Oklahoma

On February 8th, tragedy struck in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as 16-year-old Nex Benedict passed away at Saint Francis Hospital. The initial report from the chief medical examiner’s office revealed that Benedict likely died by suicide after consuming a combination of antihistamine medication and an antidepressant.

Nex Benedict, a nonbinary student at Owasso High School, had been struggling with bullying, which ultimately led to their untimely death. Just a day before the tragic incident, Benedict was suspended for getting into a fight in a school bathroom.

The community in Owasso has been deeply affected by Benedict’s passing, with many pointing to bullying as the root cause. Oklahoma’s Attorney General expressed his sorrow over the situation, emphasizing the need to address bullying in schools.

GLAAD, an LGBTQ advocacy organization, also condemned the bullying that Benedict faced, calling for accountability and action to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the investigation continues, it is crucial to address the impact of bullying on mental health, especially within the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Resources such as Trans Lifeline and The Trevor Project are available for those in need of support.
