A 27-year-old BJP functionary named G. Elumalai was discovered dead with bullet wounds in a reserve forest located on the Tiruvannamalai – Tirupattur border near the Jawadhu Hills. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and authorities.
A Mysterious Trekking Trip Gone Wrong
According to police reports, Elumalai, a resident of Adivaram village in Chengam taluk of Tiruvannamalai district, ventured into the restricted reserve forest along with eight companions for a trekking expedition on March 8. Despite the clear prohibition on entering the area, they proceeded with their plans. Elumalai managed to communicate with his family the next day, but subsequent attempts to reach him proved futile. The group of trekkers failed to return to the village, leaving their loved ones anxious and concerned.
A Heart-Wrenching Search Effort
Following the missing person’s report filed by Elumalai’s father, S. Govindaraj, the Chengam police launched a search operation in collaboration with forest officials from the Singarapettai range in Jawadhu Hills. With the aid of sniffer dogs, the authorities scoured the dense terrain for any sign of the missing individuals. Tragically, their efforts led to the grim discovery of Elumalai’s partially burnt body deep within the reserve forest.
Uncovering Disturbing Evidence
Upon closer examination, investigators noted bullet injuries on Elumalai’s body, raising suspicions of foul play in his untimely demise. Subsequently, his remains were transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai for a detailed post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, a specialised team comprising police and forest officials has been assembled to locate the remaining eight individuals who vanished alongside Elumalai. The authorities are exploring all possible leads, including the unsettling possibility of accidental gunfire during illicit activities like poaching within the hills.
