Tragedy struck at the Patna civil court on Wednesday when a 60-year-old notary advocate lost his life in a fire caused by an explosion in a power transformer. The incident also left three advocates and a client with severe burn injuries.
The explosion occurred around 1.30pm at gate number 1 in the court premises, catching everyone by surprise. Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames erupting from the transformer, covering the victims in oil and leading to fatal burn injuries. The injured individuals were rushed to the PMCH for immediate medical attention.
The deceased, identified as Devendra Prasad, was a resident of Isopur under Phulwarisharif police station area. Tragically, due to his disabilities, he was unable to escape the flames that engulfed him. The other injured individuals, Jitendra Kumar, Hari Narayan Gupta, Prakash Kumar, and Manish Kumar, are currently receiving treatment for their burns.
Following the incident, there was chaos at the court premises as fire tenders and police rushed to the scene to bring the blaze under control. An FSL team was also called in to investigate the cause of the explosion, while a medical team provided assistance to the victims.
In response to the tragedy, lawyers and clerks staged a demonstration demanding compensation for the victim’s family, a job for his family members, and a thorough inquiry into the incident. They expressed their grievances against the civil and police authorities, as well as the electricity department.
A case has been registered against the power division for negligence based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s son, Sandeep Kumar Singh. The authorities have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the explosion.
Patna DM Shirsat Kapil Ashok visited the site of the incident along with senior police officers and district officials to assess the situation. He instructed the Additional District Magistrate, Disaster Management, Patna, to provide necessary assistance to the affected individuals, including immediate financial support to the deceased’s family and proper medical treatment for the injured.
As a gesture of goodwill, an amount of Rs 4 lakh was promptly made available to the deceased’s wife through a cheque by the electrical executive engineer, Bankipur zone. The civil surgeon, Patna, has also been directed to ensure that all the injured individuals receive the necessary medical care.
The tragic incident at the Patna civil court has left a community in mourning and raised important questions about safety measures and accountability in public spaces. Authorities have pledged to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
