Tragic Incident in Jacksonville Leads to 5-Year Prison Sentence

A devastating incident unfolded in Jacksonville, Florida, where a 20-year-old woman was sentenced to 5 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old woman. The victim, Aniyah Womack, was shot in the stomach and later dropped off at a local hospital in May, where she tragically passed away.

The incident left Womack’s family waiting for answers for 135 days, seeking closure and justice for their beloved daughter. The perpetrator, Mariah Clayton, was identified as a suspect and arrested in October 2023. Clayton changed her plea from not guilty to guilty on March 8, finally admitting her involvement in the tragic events that led to Womack’s untimely death.

Details of the Shooting

According to witnesses interviewed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO), Clayton and Womack were inside an apartment where the shooting occurred, filming TikTok videos late one night in May 2023. One witness recounted seeing Clayton holding an “all-black rifle” while Womack filmed her popping out of the shower with the weapon.

As the night progressed, a man entered the room and attempted to intervene, telling Clayton that they should not be playing with the rifle. In a tragic turn of events, the man reached for the gun, which then accidentally discharged, fatally injuring Womack. Based on witness testimony, investigators believe Clayton was in possession of the rifle at the time of the incident.

Justice and Closure for Womack’s Family

Womack’s family expressed their desire for justice for Aniyah and emphasized the importance of never giving up on seeking justice for loved ones. They urged other families facing similar situations to continue fighting for their loved ones and to build a strong support system within their communities.

As the family mourns the loss of Aniyah Womack, they remember her vibrant smile and charming personality, which will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
