Red Deer, Alberta, RCMP are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday at 5:01 a.m. on Highway 2A between Township Road 391 and Township Road 272. The incident involved a reportedly stolen vehicle and resulted in the death of one man.

Details of the Crash

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities discovered a Ford Focus with a deceased driver, identified as a 74-year-old resident of Lacombe. The Ford Focus had crossed over into northbound traffic and collided head-on with a Lincoln MKZ. The two occupants of the Lincoln MKZ sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Further investigation revealed that the Lincoln MKZ had been reported stolen during a carjacking on March 7 in Red Deer. Additionally, a loaded SKS rifle was found in a nearby ditch, believed to have been discarded by the driver after the crash.

Suspect Charged

Following the incident, Tyler Tyrone Palmantier, a 44-year-old Red Deer resident, was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), and three weapons offences. Palmantier remains in police custody, with his next court date scheduled for Wednesday at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer. The passenger in the stolen vehicle was released without charges.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have cleared the scene on Highway 2A, and normal traffic flow has resumed. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and additional charges may be brought against the individuals involved. Updates on the case will be provided as new information becomes available.
