The Incident in Greenville County, South Carolina

In a recent critical community briefing, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office shed light on a deputy-involved shooting that took place in January. The incident occurred in the area of South Piedmont Highway near Cemetery Street in Greenville County, South Carolina.

Details of the Incident

On January 26, deputies responded to two separate 911 calls reporting an assault at 1508 South Piedmont Highway. The first caller mentioned being hit in the mouth with a big stick, while the second caller reported seeing a man driving off with a girl hanging halfway out of the car, potentially having hit her.

Upon arrival at the scene around 11 p.m., deputies discovered that the suspect, Larry Doyle Simmons, had allegedly assaulted the victim with an object before fleeing. A search was initiated to locate Simmons in the vicinity.

At approximately 11:15 p.m., deputies encountered an armed man, believed to be the suspect, hiding behind a pickup truck. Despite repeated identification as law enforcement, the individual fired at deputies, prompting a return of fire that resulted in his demise. The deputies then safely approached the scene to provide medical assistance.

Uncovering the Truth

During the investigation, it was found that the deceased individual was Robert L. Campbell, aged 51, who had no involvement in the initial assault. Meanwhile, Simmons was apprehended from a nearby fenced lot where he had been hiding.

A 12 gauge pump shotgun was recovered from the scene, and further inquiries revealed that Campbell was legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under the Federal Gun Control Act.

Justifiable Use of Force

Following a thorough examination of the circumstances, Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis affirmed that the deputies’ use of deadly force was in accordance with the Sheriff’s Office policy. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting remains ongoing under the supervision of SLED.
