Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Deadly House Fire in Galveston Possibly Linked to Drug Debt

A tragic incident unfolded in Galveston, Texas, last month, shedding light on a dark underworld of drug-related violence. According to court records, a deadly house fire that took the life of a 55-year-old woman, Renita Hawthorne, may have been ignited over an unpaid drug debt.

Suspect Accused of Setting Fatal Fire

Courtney Allen Thompson stands accused of setting fire to a home on 29th Street near Winnie Street in the early hours of February 29. Tragically, Renita Hawthorne was trapped inside the burning house and lost her life while trying to escape. Five others, including two firefighters, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Motivated by Unsettled Drug Debt

Investigations revealed a disturbing motive behind the arson attack. Police believe Thompson set the fire as retaliation for Hawthorne’s son failing to settle a marijuana debt. The victim’s son had reportedly been receiving threats over the drug debt for some time before the fatal incident.

Deliberate Act of Violence

Authorities disclosed that the fire was intentionally set on two separate staircases outside the house, blocking any potential escape routes for the occupants. Hawthorne’s son’s girlfriend even received chilling text messages shortly after the fire, one of which stated, “Tell (him) we burned down his mama’s house.”

Arrest and Murder Charges

Footage from the scene led to the arrest of Thompson on capital murder charges. While there were two individuals spotted near the fire, Thompson was the sole suspect apprehended in connection with the fatal incident.

Family Seeks Justice

The family of Renita Hawthorne is grappling with the heartbreaking loss and is demanding justice for her untimely death. Following the ruling of homicide in connection with the house fire, the family hopes for answers and closure in the wake of this devastating tragedy.
