(Wilmington, DE. 19805) In a heartbreaking turn of events, detectives from the New Castle County Division of Police have charged 30-year-old Mercedes Ferguson of Wilmington with Murder by Abuse following a child death investigation that shook the community.

Tragic Incident Unfolds in Greenview at Chestnut Run

The investigation into the tragic incident began in the early hours of August 18, 2023, at 1:24 a.m. after a distressing 9-1-1 call was made from a home in the unit block of Court Drive in the quiet community of Greenview at Chestnut Run.

Upon arrival, Patrol Officers from the New Castle County Division of Police, New Castle County Paramedics, and Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene to provide immediate assistance to the Victim, a 4-year-old boy who was later identified as the son of Mercedes Ferguson. Despite their best efforts, the young child was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.

Autopsy Reveals Shocking Cause of Death

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science conducted an autopsy on the victim’s body to determine the cause and manner of death. The results were nothing short of devastating – the autopsy revealed that the 4-year-old’s death was a result of homicide through starvation, sending shockwaves through the community.

Arrest Made in Connection to Child’s Death

Fast forward to March 8th, 2024, after thorough review and collaboration with the Delaware Attorney General’s Office, detectives obtained warrants for the arrest of Mercedes Ferguson. She was taken into custody on March 11th, 2024, at a home on Herbert Drive in New Castle, DE.

Following her arrest, Mercedes Ferguson was brought to the New Castle County Police headquarters where she faced charges of one felony count of Murder by abuse or neglect first-degree recklessly caused the death of a child. She was arraigned at the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and remanded to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution after failing to pay $1,000,000.00 cash bail.
