Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragic Incident in Satyamangalam Tiger Reserve

Yesterday, a heart-wrenching incident took place at the Satyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) in Tamil Nadu. A 74-year-old man named Mathiya, who worked as a watchman on a private farm land, was tragically trampled to death by a wild elephant.

Details of the Incident

According to eyewitnesses, a wild elephant strayed into the farm land where Mathiya was on duty. In an attempt to scare off the elephant, Mathiya resorted to bursting crackers. However, the pachyderm reacted aggressively and charged towards him, resulting in a fatal trampling.

Despite the efforts of local people to intervene and rush Mathiya to the hospital, the elephant stood guard at the spot, causing further delay in providing medical assistance.

Forest Officials Respond

Forest officials were alerted to the situation and promptly arrived at the scene. After ensuring the safety of the onlookers, they were able to remove Mathiya’s body once the elephant had moved away from the area.

Rising Man-Animal Conflicts

This tragic incident sheds light on the increasing instances of man-animal conflicts in the western ghat forest ranges of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. As human populations encroach further into wildlife habitats, such confrontations are becoming more frequent and deadly.

It is a stark reminder of the need for greater conservation efforts and coexistence strategies to ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife in these sensitive ecosystems.

Our thoughts are with Mathiya’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
