Sabah, a beautiful state in Malaysia known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, was recently struck by a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two foreign tourists. The incident occurred in the east coast Semporna district, a popular destination for travellers seeking adventure and natural beauty.

State Minister’s Response

Datuk Christina Liew, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment for Sabah, has expressed deep concern over the accident and its impact on the state’s tourism image. In a statement following the incident, she emphasized the importance of enhancing road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Collaboration for Road Safety

Liew has pledged to work closely with Sri Pelancongan Sabah chairman Ken Pan Ying On to address road safety issues, particularly in accident-prone areas like the Jalan Tawau-Semporna stretch where the fatal collision occurred. By collaborating with local authorities, she aims to implement effective measures to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors to Sabah.

Details of the Accident

The tragic incident involved a tour van carrying foreign tourists that collided with a trailer lorry on KM20 of Jalan Semporna-Tawau. The collision resulted in the death of a Singaporean man and a Vietnamese woman, as well as injuries to five other passengers, including an 11-year-old girl from Singapore.

In response to the accident, the Semporna police chief confirmed that the driver of the trailer lorry was arrested to assist in the investigations. The case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987, with potential penalties including imprisonment and fines for the driver responsible for the tragic incident.

Previous Incidents

This is not the first fatal accident to occur in the Semporna district, as a similar incident involving foreign nationals took place last November. These incidents highlight the need for improved road safety measures in the region to protect both residents and visitors.
