Two individuals tragically lost their lives in an avalanche that struck Hokkaido, northern Japan. The victims have been identified as Joshua Sellens, a 33-year-old guide residing in Kutchan, and Isabella Bolton, aged 21, both hailing from New Zealand.

Details of the Incident

The avalanche occurred on the majestic Mt. Yotei, a 1,898-meter peak that spans across towns including Kutchan and Niseko. The avalanche struck a group of backcountry skiers, with Sellens and Bolton among them. The group of six skiers was hit on the northern slope of the mountain, just above its midpoint.

Survivor’s Account

One member of the group, whose identity has not been disclosed, managed to survive the avalanche but sustained injuries to his shoulder. Authorities are providing necessary medical attention to the survivor.
