Over the weekend, a tragic accident occurred in Berkeley County, South Carolina, resulting in the death of one driver and hospitalization of another. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a car and SUV collided, leading to the fatal outcome.

Details of the Incident

The collision took place at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, in the Bonneau area of Berkeley County. Guclu Yertut, a 54-year-old resident of Georgetown, was identified as the driver who tragically lost his life in the crash. The Berkeley County Coroner, Darnell Hartwell, confirmed Yertut’s identity.

Yertut was driving a 2014 Kia Soul northbound on U.S. 17A when the vehicle crossed the center line near Diamondback Lane. The car collided head-on with a 2024 Mitsubishi SUV traveling south on the same road. Yertut succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the SUV driver was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigation Ongoing

The circumstances that led to the Kia crossing into oncoming traffic remain under investigation by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office. It is unclear at this time whether either driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

As of the latest data from the Department of Public Safety, 151 fatalities have been recorded on South Carolina roads in 2024. In the previous year, 999 individuals lost their lives in traffic accidents in the state. In Berkeley County alone, six fatalities have been reported so far in 2024, compared to 60 deaths in the county in 2023.
