The Gruesome Attack Near Neuschwanstein Castle

An American man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a tourist and the attempted murder of her friend – both US citizens from Illinois – in a gruesome attack near one of Germany’s most popular tourist sights. The incident took place near Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, a historic and picturesque location that attracts visitors from all over the world.

The Trial and Sentencing

The 31-year-old tourist from Michigan, identified as Troy B., was convicted by a German court for the horrific attack on the two women. In a sentencing at the court in the southern town of Kempten, Judge Christoph Schwiebacher emphasized the gravity of the offense and ruled that the perpetrator will not be eligible for automatic parole after 15 years, as is customary in Germany.

The Horrific Details of the Attack

The attack occurred on June 14, 2023, when Troy B. befriended the two women near the historic Marienbrücke bridge, a popular viewpoint overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle. He lured them away from the public path under the pretense of showing them a better vantage point. The victims, Eva Liu and Kelsey Chang, both recent graduates from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, were unaware of the danger posed by the man.

The Tragic Outcome

During the assault, Troy B. first targeted Eva Liu. When Kelsey Chang tried to intervene, he pushed her down a slope. The perpetrator then proceeded to throttle Liu and rape her before throwing her down the slope. Other tourists who came upon the scene alerted authorities, leading to the rescue of the victims by the Füssen mountain rescue service. Unfortunately, Eva Liu succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, while Troy B. was apprehended by the police near the crime scene.

The Legal Proceedings and Potential Extradition

At the court, Alexander Stevens, the lawyer representing Troy B., revealed that his client may have to serve his sentence in a German prison, with no possibility of parole for 15 years. The decision on whether to appeal the court’s ruling is still pending. The lawyer indicated that extradition to the US could only occur if requested by the American authorities or initiated by Troy B. himself.

The Significance of Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle, located approximately 65 miles southwest of Munich, is a renowned tourist destination in Europe, attracting millions of visitors annually. The castle’s stunning architecture and picturesque surroundings make it a popular choice for travellers seeking a glimpse into Germany’s rich history and culture.
