The Incident in Downtown D.C.

Prosecutors in the District have announced that no charges will be filed against a U.S. Park Police officer who fatally shot a man last fall in downtown D.C. The incident took place in Burke Park, bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, L Street, and 12th Street NW. The officer, whose name has not been released to the public, was involved in an exchange of gunfire during an attempted drug arrest.

The Victim: Turell Delonte Campbell

The man who tragically lost his life in this incident has been identified as Turell Delonte Campbell, a 30-year-old resident of Northeast Washington. Campbell was involved in a suspected illegal drug sale when the fatal confrontation with the police occurred.

The Chain of Events

According to authorities, when multiple officers approached the scene, Campbell ran onto the 1100 block of M Street, leading to a chase by the police. One officer caught up to Campbell, and a struggle ensued between the two men. During the struggle, Campbell pulled out a gun and shot at the officer, who then returned fire. Campbell ran a few more feet before collapsing and eventually succumbing to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

The Legal Decision

Following a comprehensive review of the evidence, prosecutors from the U.S. attorney’s office in D.C. concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support charges against the Park Police officer. The decision not to bring charges was based on interviews with witnesses, body-camera footage, surveillance footage, police reports, and radio dispatches.

Public Release of Body-Camera Footage

Almost a month after the shooting, U.S. Park Police made the police body-camera footage from the incident public. The footage revealed a tense moment where the officer chased Campbell on foot, leading to the fatal exchange of gunfire. The video captured the officer’s commands and Campbell’s response, shedding light on the events that transpired.

Continuing Investigation

The U.S. attorney’s office continues to review all police-involved fatalities in the District to ensure compliance with D.C. and federal laws. The release of the body-camera footage has provided further insight into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident in downtown D.C.
