Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Kelowna Man in Kananaskis Backcountry

A devastating avalanche east of the Mount Engadine Lodge on Tower Peak in Kananaskis has claimed the life of a 19-year-old man from Kelowna. The incident occurred on March 10, when two men were skiing in the backcountry and were caught in the snowslide.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

Canmore RCMP were notified about the avalanche at around 1 p.m. on March 10. One of the skiers managed to free himself from the snow, but tragically, the second man was buried beneath the avalanche. Despite the efforts of RCMP and Kananaskis Mountain Rescue, the victim’s body was not recovered until the following day, just before 10 a.m. on March 11.

Current Avalanche Conditions

Following the tragic incident, a special public avalanche warning has been issued for the Canmore area, and certain parts of Kananaskis Country are periodically closed for avalanche control measures. Avalanche Canada has classified the current snowpack as “tricky”, with several skiers triggering avalanches in the past 24 hours. The danger rating for the Canmore area and into British Columbia, including Revelstoke, is considered considerable.

Staying Safe in the Backcountry

As winter activities in the backcountry carry inherent risks, it is essential to prioritize safety at all times. Before embarking on any outdoor adventures, it is recommended to check Avalanche Canada’s website, avalanche.ca, for up-to-date weather and terrain conditions. By staying informed and prepared, individuals can reduce the likelihood of encountering dangerous situations like avalanches.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the young man who lost his life in this tragic avalanche incident. May his memory be honoured, and may we all strive to stay safe and vigilant in the mountains.
