On 8 February 2024, detectives from the Baltimore Police Department apprehended Dayrel McFarland, a 27-year-old male.
Authorities suspect McFarland of fatally shooting 37-year-old Jamal Barney on 2 October 2023, at a location on the 500 block of North Payson Street.
Following his arrest, McFarland was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility and charged with first-degree murder.
At approximately 4:36 p.m. on 2 October 2023, officers from the Western District responded to a call to check on the welfare of an individual at a vacant property on the 500 block of North Payson Street.
Upon arrival, officers conversed with the caller, who expressed concern that a missing loved one might be inside the premises.
After gaining entry, officers discovered the lifeless body of the victim, Jamal Barney, showing signs of physical trauma.
The remains of the victim were subsequently transported to the Medical Examiner’s office, where he was identified as Jamal Barney, born on 24 September 1986.
Following an examination, the Medical Examiner ruled the death of Jamal Barney as a homicide on 3 October 2023.
