Oxford Airport Technical Services will pay more than $46,000 in fines connected to four serious citations.
Following the tragic death of a forklift operator at Logan Airport last year, an investigation has revealed that his employer had the chance to prevent the fatal incident. Oxford Airport Technical Services, a New York-based company with approximately 400 employees, has been fined over $46,000 for four serious citations.
The Incident at Logan Airport
The 51-year-old forklift operator from Winthrop met his untimely demise when a forklift struck a structure and overturned on August 29, 2023. The Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration determined that the operator was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
OSHA’s investigation uncovered several violations, including the failure to ensure that employees wore seatbelts. It was also noted that the forklift’s fork and mast were not raised to the necessary height to clear the area. The company was fined for neglecting to properly train and certify all forklift operators.
Violations and Consequences
Moreover, the inspection revealed that a damaged forklift had not been inspected before being put into service, and another damaged forklift was still in operation. James Mulligan, OSHA Area Director in Braintree, expressed disappointment in the company’s oversight, stating, “Every workplace fatality is tragic, especially when there are well-known safety measures that could have prevented the loss of a person’s life.”
Mulligan added, “In this case, the employer failed to train and certify their forklift operators on critical safety requirements. It’s simply inexcusable.”
