A Genesee County Sheriff’s Dept. Sergeant, Thomas Sanfratello, 54, died on Sunday, 3/10/24 after responding to an incident at Batavia Downs while on duty.

Batavia Police are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred over the weekend at Batavia Downs, a popular gaming and entertainment complex in the heart of the city.

Authorities have reported that 54-year-old Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello, a dedicated 32-year veteran of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department, lost his life while carrying out a special assignment detail at the bustling venue.

The incident unfolded when Sanfratello, accompanied by casino security personnel, responded to reports of an altercation inside the facility.

According to Batavia Police Chief Shawn Heubusch, a verbal confrontation erupted in the bar area, prompting Sanfratello and the security team to escort two patrons, identified as 33-year-old Michael Elmore and 39-year-old Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, out of the building at the request of the security staff.

Unfortunately, the situation escalated when Wilcox became physically combative with Sgt. Sanfratello. Despite his efforts, along with the assistance of security personnel, to restrain Wilcox and place her under arrest, Elmore intervened and launched a physical attack on the sergeant.

An intense struggle ensued as Elmore resisted arrest, leading to a chaotic scene where Sanfratello attempted to use a Taser device on Elmore to regain control. Tragically, during the altercation, Sanfratello became unresponsive, prompting immediate CPR measures. Despite the valiant efforts to revive him, Sanfratello succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone who witnessed the altercation or possesses video footage to come forward and assist the City of Batavia Police Department’s Detective Bureau by contacting 585-345-6311 or submitting a tip at www.bataviapolice.org.

Chief Heubusch expressed the department’s profound condolences to the family of Sergeant Sanfratello and all members of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office during this challenging period. The Sanfratello family also extended their gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends and fellow first responders.
